Review of Another Year (2010) by Daniel K — 10 Oct 2011
3: Performances and filmmaking don't get much more subtle and measured than this. This is yet another minor gem from Mike Leigh and yet another example of his anti-Hollywood tendencies. The "ending" is brutal, but sadly rings true to life, as does everything else about this world.
I place the word "ending" in quotes because it really is anything but an ending. This sad and disappointed middle age woman's life is not over, but she has very little hope of future improvements, let alone her dreams coming true.
her world is one of resignation and heartbreak. To contrast this with the arguably idyllic existence of the family she hovers around just makes it that much more painful. The differences are simple and subtle: they are satisfied with their lot, while she is not.
