Review of Annihilation (2018) by Kan R — 07 Apr 2018
This is the kind of science fiction I prefer. Unlike mainstream science fiction which focuses on merely entertaining the audience with a fancy plot or impressive action-sequences, this one takes a very grounded approach.
Some of the camera-shots, dialogues and side-narratives, though might not seem to align with or support the major plot, are very intertwined and coherent in terms of the themes of this film (a shot involving a glass of water in the middle of the table, discussions about cancer, side plot of an affair, are some of the examples which tie well thematically).
There's one particular scene which is so intense and creepy that it really made me uncomfortable (a good thing since movies are meant to affect us ). Of course the movie has some issues with pacing and some questionable decisions by the characters, but on the whole this is quite a though-provoking piece, especially because of the bizzare final sequence and open-ended conclusion.
Bring some-more of such sci-fi films Hollywood!
