Review of Annihilation (2018) by Brigitta T — 17 Mar 2018
I can't give this movie any more credit, because it's such a letdown from the world and atmosphere of the book. My greatest disappointment is that no worthier movie will be possible for the Annihilation series for many years because of one flagrantly disloyal adaptation.
A cool aesthetic? Yes, but Garland trades a consuming ambiguity and communal breakdown for a shallower, more traditional ambiguity and some cheap monster moments. The difference as I imagine it is between a monster with the mystique of Jaws and a Prometheus of plentiful but inconsequential horrors.
