Review of Annie Hall (1977) by Clint D — 31 Mar 2011
Not my favorite romantic film ever made but definitely one of my favorite comedies ever put to film. Allen is obviously a brilliant filmmaker, blending genres more seamlessly in Annie Hall than any other director has successfully done, but in this film you see how brilliant a comedian he is as well, with joke after joke never falling flat except for the ridiculous references.
Diane Keaton is the real triumph here though, pulling off the performance of a lifetime as one of the most unique and fully realized female characters ever in film. In the scene where they meet after playing tennis, it's impossible to not fall in love with her immediately.
"My Grammy didn't give out gifts, she was too busy being raped by Cossacks.".
