"Annie Hall" is easily one of the greatest romantic-comedies of all time, putting a non-linear narrative structure and the continual comic flourishes and filmmaking tricks of director Woody Allen to great use in what ends up being one of the most realistic and heartbreaking depictions of a relationship ever to be put to film.
The tone changes quite frequently, from scenes of full-blown comedy which are largely ironic and self-reflexive to those with a more intimate focus on the leading characters, and the series of memories that exist between them as they fall in love and eventually begin to struggle with their lives together.
Diane Keaton is particularly captivating as the title character, driven somewhat insane by the neurotic rants and quirks of Woody Allen's Alvy Singer. Above all else, "Annie Hall" is incredibly unique, and it marked a significant step forward for Woody Allen as an auteur filmmaker.
