Review of Annie Hall (1977) by Maxwell S — 28 Jul 2012
Annie Hall is hands down Woody Allen's most important film and possibly the most important romantic comedy for the style future romantic comedies choose to take. The best example of how literate, entertaining, funny and imaginative Woody Allen's style is, and how very well it works.
The ending really makes me fall in love with the deep subtleties of Annie Hall. The very last lines about the "I need the eggs" joke is a brilliant way to express Allen's touching and hilarious style.
Throughout the film, you realize more and more how bleak Alvy Singer is, those last lines are just a glimmer of hope for life, and the film. Has that effect that many great films have (The Godfather, Boogie Nights, Amarcord, 8 1/2) of being a film in which it is memorable through it's scenes, and it's worth being so memorable because it doesn't try hard to be as much as it is.
Though it's his most popular film among audiences, most critics will cite it as his most important as well.
