Review of Annie Hall (1977) by Daniel P — 21 Feb 2013
"Don't knock masturbation. It's sex with someone I love.".
Perhaps Woody Allen's most satisfying, funny and heartfelt film. Allen plays with the conventions film, addressing the camera, using split-screens, subtitles, voice-over and scene bleeds, to superb effect. Allen essentially plays a slightly exaggerated version of himself and as such is brilliant, and Diane Keaton is a revelation as Annie; she is stunningly beautiful (all the costuming was her own) but fragile, anxious, and also almost absent-minded at times. The script is flawless, frequently hilarious and also oddly (given the experimenting of form) realistic and finally quietly moving. One of Allen's masterpieces.
