Review of Annie Hall (1977) by Jez M — 06 Mar 2013
Woody Allen hit paydirt with this breezy, poignant, and hilarious story about modern romance in the Big Apple. Diane Keaton deservedly won the Oscar for Best Actress...Keaton's Annie Hall is fragile, assertive, and charming.
Allen is a hoot as Alvy Singer, Hall's insecure, comedy writer, lover. There's a level of credibility to this story, which seems unlikely at first, but it undergirds every scene, holding the viewer's interest.
Allen won Oscars for Best Director and Best Original Screenplay while the film beat George Lucas' Star Wars for Best Picture. The ending to this one is rightly bittersweet.
