Review of Annie Hall (1977) by Richard D — 08 Aug 2015
While this isn't my favourite Woody Allen movie, and probably isn't even his best movie, it's one of those rare films that represents an incredible creative leap for its director. Allen's entire career is clearly split into before and after "Annie Hall".
It's not just that he deals with different material here ... dealing with real life, complex romances as opposed to his lighter earlier material ... but he also experiments in a manner he never had before, breaking the fourth wall, flashing forward and backwards in time, and even including an animated segment (which was the inspiration for the Woody Allen comic strip that ran in the late 70s).
Despite it's nearly avant-garde tendencies, it's always extremely accessible and really really funny.
