Review of Annie Hall (1977) by Tsukasa A — 08 Aug 2015
Widely dubbed as Woody Allen's masterpiece, Annie Hall has aged as well as any romantic comedy ever made. What makes Annie Hall so great is how it demonstrates basic human interaction and emotion through the use of wit. Annie Hall is a hilarious movie, but not like you'd think. There's very few laugh out loud moment. Instead the humor comes in embarrassing and real life laughs.
Alvy is a neurotic comedian living in New York. He meets Annie and they start to fall in love. The story is not linear, jumping from the end of the relationship to the start to the middle back to the start and then back to the end. There's also moments where Alvy talks directly to the audience.
For good reason Annie Hall has been a mainstay when it comes to great American filmmaking for the last 40 years. There's a whole lot to love and not too much to be picky about. I remember watching this when I was 16 and thinking it was terribly overrated. Now watching it after actually realizing how relationships and the world works, it's a damn shame that I had to waste a first viewing on that dumbass high school student.
