Review of Angus, Thongs and Perfect Snogging (2008) by James S — 27 Jul 2009
Bizarrely enjoyable antidote to the High School Musicals and Hannah Montana's of today, Angus, Thongs & Perfect Snogging is something of a surprise.
Set in glamourous Eastbourne, the film charts the pursuit of McFly wannabe Robbie by Georgia, the unlucky and hapless heroine of this tale. It sounds totally lame but amid the lashings of cheese there is actually a good few grown up laughs and the teen vocabulary is always amusing.
The cast have been very well assembled to not just be a parade of Hollyoaks extras which helps make them a whole lot more believable which in turn makes the comedy of the piece work. On the surface it may seem like this film shouldn't be funny to anyone other than a 14 year old girl but thankfully that isn't the case and it doesn't have to go for the gross out jugular which it would likely do if this had been set in the US.
It's all terribly predictable and rather dipped in candyfloss by the end but it does achieve the happy ending feeling that it sets out to. You may not want to watch this movie if you were feeling in a particularly bad mood as chances are the dizzying amount of feel good may just make you want to kill every person on screen rather than cheer you up but if you are of a sunny disposition then this will no doubt find itself tickling one or two funny bones even if by the end you may feel like you're living in a pink bubble.
