Review of Angel Heart (1987) by Gemma F — 10 Jan 2008
Hell-noir, long before Mike Mignola ever first stuck the chiaroscuro tough-guy and arcane investigator world/tropes together--plus, nobody here is trying to be funny (and if they are, it ain't working).
A predetermined tragedy of identity for a private eye so deludedly incompetent he can't even understand his own motivations, overseen at every turn by De Niro's detached, dignified string-puller.
Don't you dare blink: Each frame, each cut, each splice counts; there WILL be a test, and you won't much like where you end up if you fail.
