Review of And Soon the Darkness (1970) by Stephen C — 01 Jul 2012
Forget the cack American remake, this is one of the most underrated thrillers of seventies british cinema.
The team behind the film had already worked on the cult classic The Avengers and in the case of Brian Clemens would go on to create masterpieces of the TV genre such as Thriller and The Professionals as well as Hammer classics such as Dr Jekyl ,Sister Hyde and Captain Kronos Vampire Hunter.
The story is pretty simple ,deceptivly so in fact as two young nurses cycle across France ,one of them vanishes into thin air leaving the other one to try to find out where she went.
The film adds to this by having the locals warn young Jane that the road she and her missing friend Cathy were travelling on is a "bad road " where a young girl met her death three years before.
Jane is determined to find Cathy, but the bigger problem is whether the killer is stiil lurking in the shadows and is the young man who offers her help all he claims to be?
The film makes great use of its isolated French location and although the film is shot in broad daylight their is a dark undercurrent which keeps the suspense levels high.
Add to that plenty of red herrings to keep you guessing and you have a thriller worthy of the master of the genre Alfred Hitchcock.
