Review of Anchors Aweigh (1945) by Jessicaann D — 17 Feb 2008
A bloated excuse to showcase smooth singing of Sinatra, the high-pitched screeching of Kathryn Grayson and the revolutionary dancing of Gene Kelly. I believe this is the first instance of a live action actor (Kelly) performing with animated characters. Though his dance scene with the mouse king is exciting and innovative, the rest of the movie hinges on the idea that we really care who Sinatra is going to hook up with.
Sinatra looks gaunt and his acting is questionable at best. Grayson looks as lovely and porcelain as usual, but her voice is too bird-like to be pleasant. Kelly is a charmer and he almost makes the film worth watching. However this movie is about 45 minutes too long and we certainly feel it.
In short, as far as sailors having a good time movies go, 'On The Town' takes the cake.
