Review of An Officer and a Gentleman (1982) by Jake W — 23 Aug 2009
Overall, this film was decent. I don't see what was so special about it, but it wasn't horrible either.
It's basically about Zack Mayo (Richard Gere) falling in love with a factory worker named Paula (Debra Winger). Louis Gossett, Jr. plays a drill sergeant.
This film was nominated for six Academy Awards, including Best Original Screenplay and Best Actress in a Leading Role, and won two of those nominations: Original Song and Supporting Actor for Louis Gossett, Jr.
I completely understand the Original Song win, but I don't get why Gossett, Jr. won his Oscar... I also don't understand the really strong reception of the film either... oh well.
