Review of An Awfully Big Adventure (1995) by Erica M — 18 Jul 2007
I'm still getting shivers over it... in a weird, disgusted way. It was uninteresting in the first hour and a half, but it picks up with the bombshell at the end. Although it did pain me to see Alan Rickman screaming so dejectedly when he found out the 'big secret.
' I mean don't get me wrong: he's brilliant as always, but I don't think there was enough in the movie leading up to that moment. So to me, it seemed almost desperate. Despite all that, I think the novel should be awesome: the plot does have merit, disturbing it may be.
I just don't think it works as well on film. All I could think of when the credits rolled was: "Well that was depressing...".
