Review of An American Werewolf in London (1981) by Bryan W — 14 Aug 2010
The best werewolf movie ever made.
Somehow, John Landis managed to infuse his own cheap comic sensibilities perfectly into a story influenced by all the horror films he'd seen growing up. Where other werewolf films have suffered from boring concepts or reliance on special effects, this one manages to take the standard lore and couple it with some fresh, interesting ideas that include nightmare sequences and even the undead.
Beyond this, of course, is the special effects, about which nothing needs to be said. While the zombies and dream sequences are breathtaking on their own, everything else in the film, including the acting and directing, take a back seat to the most disturbing and fantastic transformation sequence in film history, one so perfect it could not be copied or equaled, particularly with cheap CGI effects that emerge as just that. Shockingly, however, the movie might have been good even if Rick Baker hadn't been a genius.
