Review of An American Werewolf in London (1981) by James O — 02 Jul 2011
From the director of Animal House comes a different kind of animal. This could be taken both figuratively and physically. John Landis handles a horror film like he's been doing it for years, and it really works.
There are some scary scenes, a lot of funny scenes, and some emotional sequences. The performances by David Naughton and Griffin Dunne are marvelous as they treat it the way it was meant to be treated: Light-hearted and fun.
The special effects by Rick Baker didn't win him an Oscar for nothing; the werewolf transformation is so good, it looks like CGI (but is way better than CGI could ever dream of being). There's plenty, with werewolf chest-slashing and throat-ripping action.
The make-up on Jack (Dunne's character) as he slowly decomposes has yet to be matched. I cannot express my love for this film in one review, so just go and check this out for yourself.
