Review of An American in Paris (1951) by Paul D — 23 Dec 2009
Gene Kelly begins to find his best form in this delightful musical set in post-war Paris where he plays an up-and-coming artist competing for the hand of a young French dancer.
Kelly could hardly do worse with Gershwin's excellent music selection, including the talismanic 'I've Got Rhythm' and an upbeat score to drive him on; the dancing is first rate, concluding with a brilliant 18-minute ballet. Nina Foch is strong in the role of unrequited lover but sadly newcomer Leslie Caron is no match for Kelly's enthusiasm.
