Major letdown after the sublime Singin' in the Rain. Oh, this film has some brilliant dancing. But the songs are nowhere near as toe-tapping as those in Singin' in the Rain. And Levant and Caron (talented on paper as they might be) have a fraction on the charisma of O'Connor and Reynolds.

This film also lacks the humour and wit of SITR, it comes across as too try-hard cheesy. The background to the story - the arty crowd in the artiest city of all (and the studio visualisations of that city) are far better that the story itself - the romantic angle is flaccid.

What the film does have though, is Gene Kelly. Even in a hum-hum product, he's still Gene Kelly. Most of the three stars above are for him. And his awesome little apartment.
