Review of An American in Paris (1951) by Bob V — 26 Sep 2010
This movie deserves more, really, I know this. But I just don't care too much for the elaborate dance numbers that were so popular during this period (cfr Daddy Long Legs). The term 'musical' always seemed wrong to this particular vine of the genre, as there really isn't all that much singing.
Still, other than the couple of (in my opinion) much too long dance routines, this movie is charming, fast paced, witty and predictably sweet. Gene Kelly is in fine form, and Leslie Caron is charming, when I'm not being distracted by her enormous teeth (TEETH, Tom, I did say TEETH ^^). Never noticed those before, which makes me wonder if she had something done to them after her debut here, but that's neither here nor there, point is they do have screen chemistry, and with Levant & Foch to even things out with banter and snide remarks, it was bound to be a winner.
