Review of An American in Paris (1951) by Nicholas L — 02 Feb 2014
This goes to prove that an Oscar winner for best picture doesn't necessary means that the movie is good. The most talked about 18 minutes dance sequence at the end turned out having little to do with the story.
I nearly fall asleep watching it. In her debut performance, Leslie Caron is so stiff wooden and unattractive looking; I wonder how she passes her screen test during casting. (Years later, the actress transformed into a swan with terrific acting skills) A few of the background dancers look prettier and dance just as well.
This movie is all about Gene Kelly anyway. He is the dance version of Jackie Chan. Both of them choreograph and perform their own craft. Acrobatic, talented, inventive, energetic and do not mind being laughed at his own silliness.
