Review of An American in Paris (1951) by Dominique W — 19 Mar 2018
This is a gem of escapist cinema, and one of the best musicals of all time. Vincente Merrelli seamlessly blends classic and contemporary art, and adds distinct tones of surrealism in the closing sequences.
Showtune numbers and tap dancing is juxtaposed with operatic performances and gorgeous ballet, to stunning effect. Gene Kelly's choreography brings the characters to life, and the costume and set design are jaw dropping.
This movie is a flawless expression of a timeless romance through every artistic medium.
