Review of An American Crime (2007) by Carolyn G — 08 Mar 2009
I stumbled across the story of Sylvia Likens while perusing the Crime Library website. The online version was terrifying enough to read. This movie was dark, scary and deeply disturbing. I've not yet seen "The Girl Next Door", which is another version of the story released around the same time but plan to.
I think it has some big shoes to fill. Catherine Keener, whom I loved as Harper Lee, really made me hate her in this movie. Ellen Page, who didn't wow me in "Juno" as she did others, did impress me enormously here.
At the end of the movie, I was angry - at Gertrude, at Sylvia's parents, at the lying Paula, who could have stopped this all early on by admitting she was pregnant... just a great "grab you by the throat" flick!
