Review of Amy (2015) by Ryan J. B — 12 Jul 2015
Excellent documentary on the life of a troubled star. After this movie I have renewed, and deepened respect for Amy's musical abilities. She was not just a singer. She was well versed in Jazz beyond her years.
She was a composer, and a player as well. As for her demons, and the people who were in her life who fueled the demons, it's not a new story, but is nonetheless heartbreaking. The movie isn't a downer though, except at the end, and that shouldn't be a surprise to anyone.
Fame, the media, too much touring, alcohol, and drugs, and friends to do them with, are a deadly combination to way too many talented people. So the movie, while enlightening, and mostly enjoyable, was also a bit of a tear jerker.
However, if they didn't do such a good job of showing us her talent it wouldn't break your heart so much. It made me think, without being preachy, and I liked it even more for that.
