Review of Amour (2012) by Kyle T — 03 Feb 2013
Whoa, whoa, whoa... I really need to calm down when talking about this movie, but know this: I love this movie, but I have no desire to see it for a good, long time. Firstly, the direction & cinematography are brilliantly done, using really long, static shots, that are done so that right when you think about how long it is going, it cuts to the next shot.
This and the fact that there is very little music in the film at all, and a lot of it is very silent. This benefits the story and theme perfectly, which is also brilliant. But Kyle, if you find this film to be both beautiful and brilliant, why don't you want to see it? Because it is damn depressing, and requires processing of what you saw.
Haneke has basically filmed a woman die, and put it on film, and while, yes, it is beautiful, it is not a fun movie, or even one I really want to see for at least another month. It's one of my favorite films of the year, and yet, I loathe it.
The film's main two performances are heart-breaking, emotional, and extremely powerful and convincing, the direction is spectacular, the writing is really smart, but do not expect a good time at the theaters from this.
