Review of Amour (2012) by Betsabe A — 13 Feb 2013
Love; a simple title perhaps, but a word not to be taken lightly in the context of this powerful film. Here 'Love' is trying, testing, touching, devastating and all-encompassing and the viewer feels the power of it through the disintegration and break-down of what was likley the beautiful marriage of Georges (Jean-Louis Trintignant) and Anne (Emmanuelle Riva) to the unflinching love that is pushed to its limit as the husband watches his wife wither away.
Haneke directs with an astute detachment, keeping the frame static and stripping out the score, therefore never letting us be overwhelmed by melodrama but instead forcing the viewer to adopt a respect for the honesty at play.
The performances of the leads are indeed worthy of acclaim and recognition, as is Haneke's expert touch in drawing such truthful and emotional resonance from such simple material. This film is an important work from a truly gifted Auteur.
