Review of Amour (2012) by John B — 01 Oct 2013
If you're feeling like ingesting a true piece of art, then proceed, by all means, for "Amour" is that. Myself, I find the grief and the sympathy intertwined to be too overburdening to find any joy in the film.
It achieves a masterful synergy of shots staged in a slightly unconventional distance or angle to lead up to the emotional resonance, but there remains only suffering in this film. It's the dramatic equivalent of "Hostel" that admittedly, may be the most original film this year.
I'll praise it, but, like Von Trier's "Anti-Christ" I hate it, too. What a dour, dry evening spent in a theatre is this! So, the critic in me: 4.5 stars; the filmgoer: 0.5 stars, so split the difference.
