Review of American Sniper (2014) by Facebook U — 08 Aug 2016
American Sniper is the new Clint Eastwood film detailing the life and career of Chris Kyle, the most dangerous sniper in US history, with over 160 confirmed kills. I'll start by saying on a technical level the film is brilliant.
The tension and atmosphere Eastwood creates is amazing. The scenes involving child targets had me biting my nails. Bradley Cooper's acting is flawless. He gives one of his most believable performances yet, and further proves he is more than just the guy from The Hangover.
As a character study though, the film doesn't fair so well. The movie takes a very vanilla and generic approach to Kyle's character. It hardly explores his psyche or the morality at all. Basically he just a guy or goes to war and has family troubles because of it.
He feels like a movie soldier, not a real person. Wether you like him or not, he's an interesting subject, and this movie takes the "make him look like macho man, HELL YEAH!!!! AMERICA!!!!!" route instead of exploring the man's mind and morals.
It's kind of entertaining and looks pretty, but lacks a good amount of substance to back that up.I feel it's yet another average film that got an Oscar nod it didn't deserve.
