Review of American Mary (2013) by Horror Movie H — 29 Jan 2013
What makes American Mary so dynamic and slick is its cold-hearted plot with a mean yet likeable female leading role. The Soska Twins were clearly onto something when they first pitched this idea as the film is pure genius, not because of the whole "surgen gone mad" cliche but because of the twisted methods and unconventional moments that it provides, not to mention the weird characters that are involved (betty boop wanna-be, the doll woman, the dragon twins).
Although parts of the film consist of basic plotting there is something so unusual and intriguing about it all. It builds an unsettling and unfamiliar mood and atmosphere, so unfamiliar that it makes us sympathizise for Mary, at the start we should already be but towards the end she becomes a villian, yet one we root for.
The film is a little stale at times but there is no turning away from the fact that this is an effective horror which a brilliant leading lady who was pefromed with perfection. American Mary is an early contender for best horror of 2013.
