Review of American Mary (2013) by Brett H — 30 Sep 2014
American Mary has taken the body horror genre to a new refreshing extreme. Mary is a broke medical student who needed money, on an unexpected occasion when she was applying for a stripper job, she discovered she could put her talent of surgery into work.
As the operation became more bizarre, Mary sank deeper into the underworld of body modification and its consequence could prove to be deadly. Katherine Isabelle was a really good choice for the role, couldn't see anyone else playing the titular role.
I love the indie-esque feel in the film, reminded me a lot of May. The film relied on the dark comedy to keep the plot going but it felt flat at times. The use of music was simply perfect in the film, completely enhanced the atmosphere.
Though you don't actually see many graphic details of the surgeries, you can't help but feel sick at what people would do to their bodies. American Mary is a groundbreaking film serves to bring a extraordinary perspective on today's cosmetic industry.
