Review of American Graffiti (1973) by K S — 22 Jan 2012
This film is illustrative of the impressive, low tech abilities of George Lucas. I wish Lucas made more films like American Graffiti as it holds many endearing qualties that we've come to accept in the teen comedy-drama film. This is the Citizen Kane of those films.
Through the static howl of Wolfman Jack is a small town where teenagers spend their weekends cruising the strip, block by block, looking for action.
This is a movie with heart which is established through a strong chorus of characters who are portrayed by high quality acting. The soundtrack is amazing, featuring the staples of rock radio from the late 1950's and early 1960's: Beach Boys, Chuck Berry, Flamingos, Del Shannon...all the great fm staples. In addition to this we have a calvacade of classic American vehicles: Chevrolet Impala, Bel-Air, 1931 Ford Deuce Coupe, Ford Thunderbird.
This is the film that Richard Linklater used as the obvious template for 1993's seminal cult classic, Dazed and Confused.
