Review of Altered States (1980) by Russell W — 14 Feb 2009
Starts out very interestingly, with Hurt's quite unlikeable Jessup expounding on regression of the consciousness toward the primal limbic centers of the brain - however, the intriguing premise falls apart when his regressive viisons start to 'externalize' - from that point on, it becomes more like 'Dr.
Jeckyll and Mr. Hyde' than '2001' in terms of enigmatically opining on the human condition. Lots of great symbolic dream sequences - Russell does well with those, and of course, the famous silly ending where 'Love' triumphs over 'Truth' - later to be lifted by the band 'aHa' in their 'Take On Me' music video.
Drew Barrymore's very first movie!
