Review of Alpha Dog (2006) by Novan S — 12 Apr 2010
A gritty tale of drugs, excess; and violence, Alpha Dog is the Hollywood portrayal of real life criminal Jesse James Hollywood. Director Nick Cassavetes has brought together a pretty impressive group of young actors (minus Willis and Stone who seem to hinder the story with their lackluster cameos).
Emile Hirsch is engaging as Truelove. Ben Foster is downright scary (and brilliant) as the meth-addicted Jake Mazursky and Timberlake surprisingly holds his own as of the posse. Cassavetes combines style and grit to create an edge-of-your-seat drama that builds tension and excitement, culminating in the heartbreaking murder of Jake's brother, but only to lose it in the last few minutes of the film (Sharon Stone in a fat suit?).
