Review of All That Jazz (1979) by John R — 05 Jan 2004
There's no business like show business, like no business I know...
(everything about it is appealing).
What a revelation of a movie! Just as good as Chicago - although it lacks some of the pure aesthetic beauty of that film, it is a bit more moral and personal. Roy Scheider is great in it. He really makes this guy with problems come to life. Bob Fosse's direction is both egotistical and self-deprecating at once. He proves that he never dislikes his own work, but can't stand the things he did and the man he was.
Films which attempt to flatter the filmmaker don't really bother me, anyway. Sometimes I have to wonder if I wouldn't do the same myself, were I in their shoes.
Those musical numbers at the end - talk about adapting form to a totally new subject matter! Fosse really busted the genre open. The film moved me, as well.
