Review of All That Heaven Allows (1955) by Nate W — 10 Jun 2009
"All That Heaven Allows" opens as a sugary romance in suburbia. Jane Wyman is very good as a well-to-do middle-aged widow who falls for a much younger man, a somewhat underwhelming Rock Hudson, which makes them fair game for scandalous speculation.
The story evolves into a satisfying melodrama that pits the constructive powers of love against the destructive powers of social hierarchy, gossip, and regret. If nothing else, this film is worth seeing for the lighting alone, which is exquisite!
