Review of All Quiet on the Western Front (1930) by Chris D — 11 Jul 2010
A raw, devastating film, beautifully crafted to show the random horrors of war. Easily my favorite war film, because it doesn't pretend that war in the end is just, or worth the fight, like some many that glorify this exercise in international mass murder.
Despite being a story about WWI, the film resonates with its, at times, gruesome depiction of the way life is so casually destroyed, physically and mentally. All the acting here is excellent, with special nods toward Lew Ayers (Paul) and Louis Wolheim (Kat), as the men left remaining near the end of it all.
Anyone who considers war as a noble endeavor should be required to watch this film, it lays it all bare to see.
