Review of All Quiet on the Western Front (1930) by Adrian B — 10 Apr 2011
I suppose that is the first "good" Best Picture winner of them, only it is not good...it's great! Set during the recruitment stages into the bloody, violent battles of World War I, "All Quiet on the Western Front" follows a group of American soldiers, mainly young ones, who have enlisted in the army and sent to France to battle the Germans.
The film chronicles battle scenes, emotions, and tough character studies of the many men who were sent to World War I. It is a grim film, even despite the fact it was released just over eighty years ago.
The acting is great, the special effects do not date and are very impressive. The ending is haunting. This is one of the best films of the 1930's.
