Review of All About Eve (1950) by Jack G — 31 Aug 2008
It's script is good, very good, maybe *too* good, like it knows it as much as the deserved star/diva Margot in the film. It's an excellent ride through the given neuroses and backstabbing of backstage theater, though I wouldn't go out of my way to watch it again unless it was on TV.
This said, Davis is showstopping, Anne Baxter gets better with each scene, and Thelma Ritter gives the most underrated performance. And George Sanders is... George Sanders. At the least a way above average "chick flick" and at most a superb mainstream Hollywood story of intrigue in entertainment (albeit not as masterpiece-like as the other 1950 film Sunset Blvd).
