Review of All About Eve (1950) by Brian E — 22 Jan 2010
An incisive portrayal of ambition in show business. Bette Davis plays a fading star about to be superseded by a younger ingenue (Eve), and responds to the rise of Eve's fame with great insecurity. But more specifically, I think it is the feminine aspect of human insecurity that the film explores. "All About Eve" can be rightly renamed "All About Women", with its incisive observation of the feminine psyche; her beauty, talent, cunning, her need for independence and good old masculine chivalry. The script alone is a tour de force, beaming with classic one liners. It could arguably be read in monotone and not fail to deliver each punch line.
One of my favourites of ALL time.
