Review of All About Eve (1950) by Adrian B — 06 Oct 2010
The beginning of the 1950's in the cinema world released some of the finest of the films. All About Eve, the Best Picture, winner is without a doubt, one of them. The film contains some of the most memorable and most amusing lines ever spoken in film, along some of the greatest acting ever seen on screen.
Some of the highlights include the facial re-actions given by Bette Davis at times and the way she delivers her brilliant lines: "Fasten your seatbelt, it is going to be a bump night." Her finest performance on reel.
Anne Baxter should also not be overlooked. With her story of lies at the beginning, the viewer, not only the characters in the film, actually believe her. I did. I felt sorry for her and all that was completely false.
I was appalled and her performance was indeed good. George Sanders, Celeste Holm, and Thelma Ritter, and even Marilyn Monroe give outstanding supporting performances. A superb film and essentially a masterpiece, loved upon release and also loved today.
One of five films I have thoroughly enjoyed from 1950. Others being "The Asphalt Jungle," "In a Lonely Place," "Rashomon," and of course, the Billy Wilder masterpiece, "Sunset Boulevard.
" (All are a required viewing, maybe start with "All About Eve" and "Sunset Boulevard" first.).
