Review of Alita: Battle Angel (2019) by Eruy — 11 Mar 2019
I went in the cinema with very low expectations both because of the critics score and the previous bad history of bad anime adaptations. Being familiar with the source material before I watched the movie I expected to be dissapointed, especially since it was marketed as 12A. I was pleasantly surprised. The movie pays its respects to the early dystopian cyberpunk world envisioned by Yukito Kishiro.. It's world building is phenomenal although I would prefer it a little bit darker, Rosa Salazar portrays Alita beautifully and the rest of the cast do not dissapoint. Minor flaw the character of Hugo which doesn't quite convince.
It however comes from a manga which might put off some people. Lot's of little stories happen at the same time as well as nuanced details that are only hinted (and also political commentary which is there but well hidden) and might never revealed without a sequel but you wouldn't be able to tell the saga of Alita any other way.
