Review of Alien: Covenant (2017) by Brian D — 13 Jun 2017
My initial reaction, after having just watched the film for the first time, is disappointment. Everything before landing on the planet was boring to me. The middle of the film was tolerable though very reminiscent of Prometheus, even down to the storm that prevents them from getting the hell off the planet when sh*t goes sideways.
All the characters are basically Red Shirts from a Star Trek away team; meaning they have no personality, no depth and no other purpose than to die. Normally, this is not a big deal. Yet, when your protagonist is one of them, it makes the film uninteresting.
There is also a lot of convoluted plot elements that make this film seem dumb or simplistic, including no point to the story. It is a real shame that Ridley Scott killed Neill Blomkamp's Aliens sequel to make this film.
Seeing Ripley, Hicks and Newt again would have been awesome. Unlike this film.
