Review of Alien: Covenant (2017) by Rachel Z — 29 May 2017
Overlong, boring and predictable.
I waited and waited and then realized 3/4 of the way through this that it was going nowhere with an twist ending so telegraphed that it might as well have been sent via Western Union.
Much like Prometheus, the characters seem to do stupid things, very stupid things, only in service to the script.
When people do start to die off, I couldn't have cared less. Not a single character, aside from Ripley 2.0, has any development. Danny McBride is good in pretty much everything he's in but here they give him nothing to do.
Only Micheal Fassbender as David/Walter is able to keep this from being a completely snoozefest.
Despite all the flack that Prometheus caught, at least it had some new and interesting ideas to play with. I'm betting you are thinking this movie will follow up on those ideas and expand the Alien mythos You'd be wrong though. The Prometheus storyline is abruptly dumped in favor of cliche horror tropes. It didn't help that I watched James Cameron's far, farrrrr superior Aliens film a few nights before. And don't get me started on how the Xenomorph is dealt with in this. You've seen it already.
