Review of Ali (2012) by Ruhan R — 03 Feb 2010
I've only seen one or two of Michael Mann's movies, so this was delightful for me. I've been a fan of Muhammad Ali since I was a kid so I was very pleased to see this film. Will Smith did a great job of portraying Ali and his famed passion, willpower and cocky swagger.
He captured his character well, but not his spirit. Then again, could any actor capture Ali's spirit? The cinematogrophy was wonderful, it had some real great shots, especially the ones in Africa.
Lighting was effectively used as well. The soundtrack was nice too, I never thought a sex scene could be that nice, it was more artistic than hot. The script was great as well. I was really happy to see that Malcolm X's story was partially told as well, he's another hero of mine.
However his assassination was done wrong. It looked great, but he was killed by sub-machineguns, not shotguns and pistols. I know it's a strange thing to get hung up on but I had to mention it. It was cool how the "Get your hand outta my pocket!" line was there.
Fantastic movie overall.
