It does not have a very strong start and it gets weaker every second that follows. I think that Jude Law tries his best to bring the gawky script to life, but I am not sure whether there has been an actor in the entire film history who would be able to do that.

The script attempts to confront Alfie's bon vivant life with some profound questions about Happiness and Love. It seems as a good idea (although a bit outmoded), but it is not presented naturally enough to be engaging.

Note (includes SPOILERS):

The most unnatural part comes with the appearance of the cosmetics magnate. Why did Alfie become so infatuated with her? Well, obviously, the film needs it as a set-up for the final reflective scene, but aside from that I could not see any other reason. Is he so stupid to think that his rich maîtresse is so obsessed with him? I don't think so. Was he so obsessed by the thought of having a serious relationship with her? I don't think so.

I don't know how the plot develops in the original version, as I have not seen it, but I can assure the reader that I am not prejudiced against this remake.
