Review of Alexander (1996) by Bill N — 26 May 2009
Not great but not a terrible movie. I was motivated to watch it because i've been reading a book on western history and of course he's discussed - this despite the fact that I can't stand jolie nor farrell!
Stone presents a highly "stylized" dramatization of alexander's life - too much so for my liking. in some ways - in terms of structure - it's reminiscent of "citizen kane", both are movies about men with great ambition and power but end up isolated by it. in both movies the main character dies in the opening scene and then we are presented with their tale in flashbacks narrated by others. eventually we are lead back to the opening scene- which has now been contextualized.
I'd recommend only if you're interested in the history behind the movie but even then you may find stone's style intrusive.
