Review of Airport '77 (1977) by Ritu R — 11 Jul 2008

Best AIPRORT movie of the series! The story is a bit silly at first - a private 747 loaded with rich guests and an art collection is seized by hijackers after the booty and flown off course, but the plane hits an oil rig somewhere in the Bermuda Triangle(?!) and crashes into the sea, sinks to the bottom on a shallow seamount and somehow the fuselage remains intact and passengers are trapped underwater! The crash scene was very impressive and by today's SFX standards very well done and gripping.

Those trapped then try to hold it all together to help each other survive and find a way to alert the Navy and Coast Guard to be rescued. Final scenes of a sub-style salvage attemot are also well worth the price of the movie.

One that holds your attention from the start and never slackens pace. And you get a brilliant cast, featuring JACK LEMMON, DARREN MCGAVIN, LEE GRANT, BRENDA VACCARO, CHRISTOPHER LEE(horray, Dracula!!), Buck Rogers himslef GIL GERARD, veteran actress OLIVIA DE HAVILLAND from Gone With The Wind and more!
