Review of Agora (2009) by Rodrigo G — 23 Oct 2012
One of my favorite movies of the last few years. An interesting story about science and religion: an honest portrayal of several religions clashing and of the obsessive fanaticism that can appear in faith.
Rachel Weisz's performance is refreshing -- she ignores her own beauty and plays the smart girl without apology. The film has the subtle flavor of Judaistic propaganda, but it's probably being historically fair.
The acting is good but the production feels a bit cheesy -- don't expect "Troy." Yet what you get in the movie is something altogether different than most sword-and-sandal epics: a story about the dark side of Christianity, as it takes over the pagan world.
And who writes good movies about science? I loved recalling my high school physics professor, Mr. Smith -- his lessons about ellipses and the orbits of a planet. I can't say I loved this film, but I'll watch it again.
The best parts are the science and Rachel Weisz's amazing cheekbones!
