Review of Against the Dark (2009) by Thomas N — 05 May 2009
Yet another disappointment from The Seagal. Why does this man avoid as little screen time as possible in his movies? Doesn't make sense, especially taking in the fact that he's washed up (I love you Seagal, but god damn are you washed up).
That said, this wasn't a complete waste of my time. I dug the fast pace, the many vampire attacks, and the good casting (Keith David is back and Jenna Harrison is adorable). Special mention to Tanoai Reed who looked like The Rock (apparently they're related) and had the balls to back up the looks.
Lastly, the red splashes were plentiful here and kept me entertained. The movie looked good, and that's about all you'll get. There were many ideas never focused on, thus creating character and plot holes.
There were also cool set ups that never went ANYWHERE in their execution (elevator). The setting ws okay for this type of movie, but got really tiresome by the end of it. Do something else now! The stupid reasons they gave to keep them in there were also lame.
Seagal was also a major diappointment. I know his movies aren't the greatest, but I do enjoy seeing him pull off some sweet fight scenes now and again. No dice, here. He was pulling shit TOWARDS THE CAMERA.
Come on. Add to that some ho hum directing (point and shoot with kool odd angle), a lame score (who the hell wrote it? it's awful), putrid lines and a rip off of original material to begin with (28 Days/Weeks Later) and you get one that's not only good for the average moviegoer but to Seagal fans as well.
Rent some of his earlier stuff if you want real Seagal and average Joes can rent the "28 Days Later" pack. Not worth it.
